CROSSROADS AT CRAWFORD

===========================GulfWire~~Perspectives=========================

Seldom has a single day produced as much high-caliber news and analysis of
the most outstanding issues in the Saudi Arabian-United States special
relationship. GulfWire is pleased to bring to its readers news and views
from U.S. and Gulf region media on the April 25 meeting between President
Bush and Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Abdullah.

SAUDI TO WARN BUSH OF RUPTURE OVER ISRAEL POLICY
“…Crown Prince Abdullah of Saudi Arabia is expected to tell President Bush
in stark terms at their meeting on [Apr. 25] that the strategic relationship
between their two countries will be threatened if Mr. Bush does not moderate
his support for Israel’s military policies…”  Complete report…

THE ODD COUPLE
“One national leader has four wives, chain smokes, rides around in a Rolls
Royce, sleeps until noon and spends the wee hours of the night in an office
with a bank of 33 television sets so he can monitor all available satellite
channels at once. The other married his childhood sweetheart, runs a
seven-minute mile, mucks around his ranch in a pickup truck, rises before
dawn and rarely watches TV news, preferring to go to bed by 10 p.m…”
Complete report…

SPINNING ABDULLAH’S TRIP TO THE US
“…One only needs to look at the titles in yesterday’s newspapers to guess
the direction of the stories regarding yesterday’s visit between Crown
Prince Abdullah and President Bush on his ranch in Crawford, Texas.  “The
Odd Couple” on yesterday’s front page of the Washington Times underscores
the differences, and similarities, between the crown prince and the
president, and in essence, between Saudi Arabia and the United States.
This — from the same newspaper that wrote a scathing anti-Saudi lead
editorial on Wednesday entitled: ‘More Saudi Lies.’”  Complete report…

PRINCE TREADS FINE LINE WHEN MEETING BUSH
“…President George W. Bush’s Crawford Ranch may be a relaxed setting in
which to overcome months of strain in the US-Saudi relationship. But the
alliance may be headed for more difficult times unless Saudi Arabia’s Crown
Prince Abdullah can persuade the president to put some distance between the
US and Israel…” Complete report...

BUSH, ABDULLAH AGREE ON QUEST FOR PEACE
Leaders Differ on How Mideast Can Attain It
“After nearly five hours of talks [in Crawford, Texas Apr. 25], President
Bush and Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah agreed that they both seek a Mideast
peace based on side-by-side Israeli and Palestinian states, but they
appeared to have made little progress in determining how to achieve
it…  …Abdullah’s main mission, said Adel Jubeir, the crown prince’s senior
foreign policy adviser, was to “make sure that President Bush is aware” of
the level of anger in the Middle East and the Arab world over what is seen
as the U.S. unwillingness or inability to control Israeli Prime Minister
Ariel Sharon…”  Complete report…

TEXT: BUSH ASSESSES MEETING WITH SAUDI CROWN PRINCE
“…The crown prince and I had a very cordial meeting that confirmed the
strong relationship between Saudi Arabia and the United States of America.
Our partnership is important to both our nations. And it is important for
the cause of peace and stability in the Middle East and the world. We
discussed the critical importance of the war on terror. Much of our
discussion centered on the Middle East and how to defuse the current
situation, so we can get back on the path to peace. Our two nations share a
vision of two states, Israel and Palestine, living side-by-side in peace and
security…”  Complete text…

SAUDI ARABIA WARNS US ON MIDEAST POLICY
Adel Al-Jubeir, a foreign policy adviser to the Saudi government, told
reporters Abdullah had warned Bush about the direction of U.S. policy in the
Middle East.  “The crown prince speaks directly, he is sincere and doesn’t
mince words,” Al-Jubeir said. “The message is, if the violence does not
diminish, there will be grave consequences for the U.S. and its interests in
the region.”  Al-Jubeir said Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon must
withdraw Israeli troops from Palestinian cities and towns, end the sieges of
Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat at Ramallah and around the Church of the
Nativity in Bethlehem, and submit to a swift U.N.fact-finding mission in
Jenin…”  Complete report…

SAUDIS ISSUE BLUNT WARNING TO BUSH
Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler, Crown Prince Abdullah, has warned President
George W. Bush of grave consequences to US interests in the Middle East
unless it does more to restrain Israel.  He delivered the message during an
informal summit at the president’s Texas ranch…  …Mr. al-Jubeir was careful,
however, to play down talk of a rift in US-Saudi relations, describing their
friendship as unbreakable…”  Complete report…

SAUDI PRINCE ASKS BUSH TO PRESSURE ISRAEL
“Saudi Arabia made it clear that they will not use oil as a weapon,” Bush
said after five hours of talks at his ranch in Crawford, Texas. Bush said
Israel “must finish its withdrawal..”  Complete report…

SAUDIS PRESS BUSH OVER SHARON STANCE
“Saudi officials pressed the US to reverse its policy towards Ariel Sharon,
warning that the Israeli prime minister would push the Middle East into a
regional war unless Washington intervened to stop him...” Complete report...

ANALYSIS: TOUGH TASK FOR SAUDI PRINCE
“…But all the signs are that the septuagenarian Saudi prince will have to
shout to make himself heard above a chorus of contrary advice.  Influential
hawks in Congress, the Pentagon, the National Security Agency and the CIA
all blame Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian militants for the recent
violence in the Middle East…”  Complete report…

BUSH URGED TO MODERATE SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL
“The two leaders held two hours of formal talks at Bush’s ranch in Crawford,
Texas, as world oil prices jumped on reports - later denied by the Saudis -
that frustration over perceived U.S. favoritism toward Israel could drive
Saudi Arabia to consider supporting an Iraqi suspension of oil exports…”
Complete report…

SAUDI TELLS BUSH U.S. MUST TEMPER BACKING OF ISRAEL
“…In several sessions lasting five hours at the president’s central Texas
ranch, the crown prince told Mr. Bush that if the United States did not do
more to stop incursions into Palestinian areas by the forces of Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon, it would continue to lose credibility in the Middle
East and create more instability there… …Both Mr. Bush and Mr. Jubeir said
the crown prince had not threatened in any way to reduce Saudi oil exports
to the United States. A person close to the prince had suggested on
Wednesday that could happen if the United States continued what the Saudis
view as a one-sided policy toward Israel…”  Complete report…

BUSH AND ABDULLAH LAY FOUNDATION FOR CLOSER PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP
“…No concrete progress resulted from the five-hour session on Bush’s ranch
Thursday, but both camps said that by building a personal relationship, the
two leaders had made progress in improving US-Saudi relations and perhaps
the Mideast peace process…” Complete report...
